Chicago Marathon 2025
One of the best and fastest marathon courses in the world and one of the six World Marathon Majors.
The Chicago Marathon is a marathon race held every October in Chicago, Illinois. It is one of the six World Marathon Majors. Thus, it is also a World Athletics Label Road Race. The Chicago Marathon is the fourth-largest race by number of finishers worldwide. Annual Chicago marathons were held from 1905 to the 1920s, but the first race in the present series occurred on September 25, 1977, under the original name the Mayor Daley Marathon, which drew a field of 4,200 runners. The race has been held every year since, except in 1987 when only a half-marathon was run, and in 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. It became among the fastest-growing modern-marathon road races in the world, due in part to its largely fast and flat course which facilitates the pursuit of personal records and world record performances.Since 2008, the race has been sponsored and organized by Bank of America, and is officially known as the Bank of America Chicago Marathon. The race is limited to 45,000 runners and only runners who finish within 61⁄2 hours are officially timed. 45,000 runners each year 1.7 million estimated annual spectators 50 U.S. states and over 100 countries represented 26.2-mile course through 29 Chicago neighborhoods.
In the 2023 Bank of America Chicago Marathon a new world record was set, this time for men’s category, with the unreal tome of 2:00:35 by Kenyan athlete Kelvin Kiptum Cheruiyot.
In 2024, a year marked by both tragedy and triumph, the running community mourned the loss of the great Kelvin Kiptum and celebrated Ruth Chepng’etich’s extraordinary new marathon world record.
Kelvin Kiptum’s sudden death, along with his coach Gervais Hakizimana on February 11, 2024, left a profound impact on the global athletic community. Acknowledged as one of the most promising marathoners, Kiptum’s passing was honored at the Chicago Marathon on October 13, 2024, with a moment of silence and special tribute stickers worn by athletes, reflecting the respect and admiration he had garnered worldwide.
On that same day, Ruth Chepng’etich made history, setting a new world record in the marathon with an astonishing time of 2:09:56. Her performance shattered Tigst Assefa’s previous record of 2:11:53 by nearly two minutes, marking her as the first woman to break the 2:11 and 2:10 barriers. In a heartfelt gesture, Chepng’etich dedicated her record-breaking run to Kiptum, her fellow Kenyan and the men’s world record holder, cementing her achievement as a tribute to his legacy. Her remarkable run stands as a testament not only to her talent and determination but also to the enduring spirit and camaraderie of the global running community.
