Let's Meet The Comrades Marathon
The Comrades Marathon is one of the most iconic and historic ultramarathons in the world. Held in South Africa since 1921, it attracts runners from all corners of the globe. The route stretches between the cities of Durban and Pietermaritzburg, covering a distance of approximately 89 kilometers, depending on the direction of the course each year.
Founded by Vic Clapham, a veteran of World War I, the race was established to honor his comrades who lost their lives during the war. The event is dedicated to courage, endurance, and camaraderie – virtues that define not only the runners but also the race’s rich history.
The race alternates each year between two directions:
"Up Run": From Durban to Pietermaritzburg, featuring a challenging uphill route.
"Down Run": From Pietermaritzburg to Durban, characterized by steep downhill stretches.
Runners have 12 hours to complete the course, with support and refreshment stations scattered along the way.
The 2025 race is a “Down Run” starting in Pietermaritzburg and finishing in Durban. Last years race was confirmed to have a route distance of 85.91km, making it the shortest route distance in Comrades history.
The Comrades Marathon is not just a race. It is a test of mental and physical endurance, blending physical effort with spiritual triumph. For many, finishing this race is a lifelong dream, and the cheering crowds create an atmosphere filled with inspiration.
It is a race for athletes of all levels, from professional runners to amateurs seeking to push their limits. Each participant becomes part of a global community that shares a passion for running and determination.
